The Hellenic American Academy Adult Theater Group was formed in the late fall of 2006 as part of the Cultural Department of the Academy. It has aimed at enriching the lives of its members, while, at the same time, helping them to develop their craft and their theatrical skills. Its immediate goal is to produce and perform high caliber modern Hellenic plays for the Hellenic American community entertaining and gratifying its theatre going members.
The Academy Adult Theatre Group, (which is still in search of a name) opened its
inaugural season in late May 2007, with the production of Alekos Sakellarios clever
farce, “My Friend, Lefterakis” («Ο Φίλος μου, Ο Λευτεράκης»). Three wonderful performances,
attended by close to 500 people, were met with huge critical and commercial success.
“My friend, Lefterakis”, was directed by Takis Theotokatos and the sets were built
by Spyros Karras. The actors (most of them stepping on the stage for the first time
in their lives) that made its success possible, were: Maria Karahalios, Spyros Karras,
Steve Ballis, Georgia Metropoulos, Takis Theotokatos, Jim Vadevoulis, Helena Yotis,
Eleni Siavelis and Vasiliki Grosso.
Currently, two more productions are in rehearsal. Dimitris Psathas’ classic satire
on politics and lying, “Liar Is Wanted” («Ζητείται Ψέφτης») will open May 1 and
will run for two more performances, May 2 and 3. Also in rehearsal, K. Yalamas’
romantic comedy “A Knight For Vasoula” («Ένας Ιππότης Για Τη Βασούλα»). Performances
of this very funny play about money and romance are scheduled for the beginning
of June 2008. Exact dates to be announced soon.
The Adult Theatre Group is always in need of new members. Actors, directors, designers,
sound and light technicians, volunteers of any kind are welcome to join the group
and become part of its work, development and success.
