  UPCOMING EVENTS

Besides the ongoing activities, there are other significant cultural events scheduled to take place at the Academy’s auditorium, 1085 Lake Cook Rd, Deerfield. For more information, call (847) 317-1063.

Friday, April 30, 2010 7:30 PM at the Academy.

Saturday, May 01, 2010 7:30 PM at the Academy.

The Hellenic American Academy presents the well known Greek-American stand up comic Ellen Karis in concert, Friday, April 30, 7:30 pm and Saturday, May 1, 7:30 pm at the Academy's auditorium. More details to follow shortly...

Ellen has become popular in the Greek American community, being one of the very few Greek female stand-up comedians. She performs at Church functions and Greek fundraisers in the US and Canada and is part of the popular “Greek Gods of Comedy”. Ellen is delighting audiences with her brand of sarcastic, observational humor rooted in her conflict of being raised as a traditional Greek-American woman in a non-traditional modern world. Ellen jokes about her family’s disappointment in her not taking the expected life path, her relationships and the idiosyncrasies of the ever changing world we live in. She has also parlayed her quick wit to become a regular panelist on FoxNews.Com’s web show “The Strategy Room” and on Fox News Channel’s TV shows “Hannity” and “Red Eye”. Ellen is also an actress having been in several independent films and TV shows including “The Sopranos”.

  ONGOING EVENTS

As with every year during the late months of winter, cultural activities at the Hellenic American Academy have reached a feverish pitch.

The end of January found students from the Academy’s schools and the Academy’s adult choir, participating impressively in important occasions celebrating Greek Letters Day.

February and the months of spring that follow, is a significant period in which activities are intensified in preparation for the end of the year programs.

Here is a list of the cultural programs and happenings that truly emphasize the Academy’s commitment to Culture and the Arts:

  • Almost daily after school drama classes for kids 7-18 years old preparing their performances for the middle of May, 2008.
  • The Adult Theatre Group of the Academy, rehearsing two plays: «Ζητείτε Ψέφτης», (“Liar Wanted”), by Dimitris Psathas, to be performed at the beginning of May and «Ένας Ιππότης Για Τη Βασούλα», (“A Knight for Vasoula”), scheduled for the beginning of June.
  • The Academy’s Adult Choir, under the direction of Dimitris Marinos, rehearsing a program dedicated to the music and songs of Manos Hadgidakis, for late May performances.
  • Bouzouki lessons, every Saturday for kids and adults, beginners or bouzouki players who would like to develop their craft.
  • Soon to be formed: Children’s Choir, Byzantine Choir & Hellenic Traditional Dance Group.

Reaching Out

Like a crowd at a concert anticipating the opening of the doors, the students at the Hellenic American Academy hurried onto the bright, yellow, school bus. The wheels meandered their way through the highway traffic on 294. Cars grey, white and tan flicked by. Within twenty minutes, the students had arrived at the graying concrete steps of the Greek Orthodox Annunciation Church of Chicago.

Father Sotiri, in his new black gown, led the way. Students quietly descended the church stairs whispering words filled with inquiry. The musty smell, similar to that of old books, filled their nostrils. Questions ensued, “Who will we be serving? How many people are coming? What food will we serve? Who made the food?

Enter a gracious old lady named Kiria Georgia. With her sparkly brown eyes and lovely soft smile she responded, “Two boys in the front to sign in the people, and six students to serve the food.” Kiria Georgia informed us with her words as well as her hand gestures. “The food provided by the Holy Trinity Philloptochos will include: lasagna, salad corn, bread, and the famous Greek baklava. Also we need two students to serve the coffee. However, you must insist that our guests obtain their coffee only after they have eaten their meal.” With Kuria Georgia’s directions fresh in their minds, students stood at their posts impatiently waiting their guest.

Once the crowd entered the church basement, there was no time to think! With innocent smiles and sugary words, our students greeted and served their guest. “Good morning,” blurted the children one after another like a wave at a concert. Each of the students, wondering, in their inexperienced minds, how a person ends up homeless. Anonymous faces made their way down the line, as the children, one by one, spooned out the food on the plates of the homeless.

Our uniformed students glowed with enthusiasm as they added ‘elpida’ to what might be a grim existence for these homeless people. It was a day the students would not forget as the bright yellow school bus returned them to the safety and beauty of their world.
